What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is focused on treating common and complex conditions relating to the mouth, jaw, face, and neck.

Whether it is a routine tooth extraction or corrective jaw surgery, our experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon is committed to delivering comprehensive care according to each patient’s requirements.

Common Oral and Maxillofacial Procedures

Although oral surgery and maxillofacial surgery overlap, it is important to know that they are not the same. Oral surgery is performed to fix problems in the mouth, teeth, and gums; maxillofacial procedures treat the jaw, face, and neck.

Oral Surgery:

Tooth extractions
Performed to remove a tooth completely from its socket, usually due to the tooth being damaged, decayed, or overcrowded teeth
Wisdom tooth removal
Involves surgically removing the wisdom tooth (third molar tooth located at the back of the mouth). It is a more complex procedure than a normal tooth extraction.
Dental implants
These are titanium posts that are surgically and permanently placed into the jawbone to support crowns, bridges, or dentures.
Biopsies (for oral lesions)
A small tissue sample from the patient's oral lesion (mouth ulcer or sore) is obtained to identify the cause of the lesion, as well as detect for oral cancer
Dental bone grafting
This is performed to add bone material in the jaw where there is insufficient bone density, usually as a foundation for dental implants or to repair bone loss.

Maxillofacial Surgery:

Corrective orthognathic (jaw) surgery
This aims to realign the upper and lower jaw if it is improperly aligned, or if the patient has bite problems or difficulty chewing/breathing/speaking.
Facial trauma surgery
Addresses injuries to the face or jaw such as jaw or cheekbone fractures, and restores any affected soft tissue.
Cleft lip and palate repair
This is reconstructive surgery to close and reshape the lip and/or palate to restore function of the lips and mouth.
TMJ disorder treatment
This can range from conservative treatments to TMJ surgery; the goal is to alleviate pain and restore movement in the jaw.
Sleep apnoea surgery
The surgeon will remove or shift the obstructive tissues in the back of the throat to improve breathing and sleep quality.
