What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is dental care that addresses the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gum disease, and other issues affecting the periodontium (tissues supporting the teeth).

Periodontists use their expertise to restore and maintain patients’ gum health for a confident and lasting smile.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease or periodontal disease, occurs when the periodontium (gums, ligaments, bone) is infected by dental plaque, resulting in inflammation and bleeding in the gums. If it is not properly treated, it can lead to tooth decay and bone loss. If left untreated, it can lead to severe gum disease (periodontitis).

The main cause of gum disease is plaque buildup from poor oral hygiene (infrequent brushing and flossing). Other possible influences could be smoking, genetics, or hormonal changes.

Signs & Symptoms of Gum Disease

Unfortunately, gum disease does not have many noticeable symptoms in its early stages; people tend to feel pain once it progresses to the later stages. Hence it is important to recognise the warning signs that could indicate unhealthy gums.

Some common symptoms of gum disease are:

  • Red, swollen gums
  • Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Receding gums (exposing the root of the teeth)
  • Loose teeth (or teeth that are misaligned)
  • Pain/discomfort while chewing
If you’re noticing any of these symptoms, don’t delay on getting them checked.

Why You Shouldn’t Delay Gum Disease Treatment

Ignoring gum disease can cause tooth loss, jawbone deterioration, and increase the risk of systemic disorders like stroke, diabetes, and heart disease. Relieving symptoms like bleeding or receding gums through periodontal treatment is essential to preserve oral health and prevent further development of gum disease.
