Gum disease or periodontal disease, occurs when the periodontium (gums, ligaments, bone) is infected by dental plaque, resulting in inflammation and bleeding in the gums. If it is not properly treated, it can lead to tooth decay and bone loss. If left untreated, it can lead to severe gum disease (periodontitis).
The main cause of gum disease is plaque buildup from poor oral hygiene (infrequent brushing and flossing). Other possible influences could be smoking, genetics, or hormonal changes.
Unfortunately, gum disease does not have many noticeable symptoms in its early stages; people tend to feel pain once it progresses to the later stages. Hence it is important to recognise the warning signs that could indicate unhealthy gums.
